From The Patients...

After speaking with many patients, several requested that I set up a place where they could tell their stories. I have set aside this area so that their stories, in their own words would be related to the world. The following are the patients' unedited comments. In addition, several of these patients have included their email address so that should you have questions/concerns/etc. and would like to get their perspectives and experiences, you can send these requests directly to them. They truly understand what it is like to be in a similar position to yourself and are eager to help in any way they can. I hope that you find this patient perspectives area useful.

Patient Stories - Post Refractive Surgery.

Kirk Jamison Post-Lasik (Multiple), Post PRK

In 1997, I left had my first of 13 LASIK procedures, in hopes of ending my need for contacts, and in preparation for an all out effort at senior level golf. The day of surgery started with a computer code change that directly impacted the lasers ability to target correctly. Needless to say, nobody but the laser technician was aware, and the end result was over 200 patients being irreparably harmed. As a graphic designer, video editor and 3D modeler, my vision - “good” vision was critical in order for me to perform my job, and it was gone. No amount of contact lenses could bring it back to any measure of an acceptable level much less 20/20 vision. Over the next two years, I underwent the remaining LASIK procedures and slowly got to a point where I could see well enough with my right eye that I could drive. My left eye couldn’t regain any optics that allowed me to see with any level of clarity. Needless to say, my golf game tanked. I never saw a shot of mine that went over 100 yards, and reading greens was almost impossible. I tried everything I could. I’ve been in every contact lens made with no positive results, and even underwent PRK in an effort to regain some level of acceptable sight in my left eye. I couldn’t begin to tell you how many times I’ve been refracted to a 20/30 level only to walk outside and not be able to see street signs.

I found Dr. Kenneth Maller in the VSRN’s resource network while reading through their bulletin board. I kept noticing that one name kept popping up and that name was Dr. Maller's. Folks with problems just like mine had gone to him and gotten real results. Not just a couple of folks but a lot of them.

Me being in Denver and Dr. Maller being in Ft Lauderdale was a slight obstacle, especially giving him 10 days to work his magic, but the bulletin board folks were very convincing, and I figured it’d be a good vacation if nothing else.

Dr. Maller turned out to be everything the VSRN folks said and more. While the appointment, the measurements, and procedures were pretty much normal, Dr. Maller isn’t. He thinks out of the box and gets great results. When I complained that my inside vision didn’t compare to my outside vision, Dr. Maller took me outside and refracted me in the parking lot. There was almost 2 diopters difference. I now see 20/15 with my right eye, and can read without the aid of glasses. My left eye is still not as good as I would like it to be, but Dr. Maller has it where I can read, without glasses and can see at a 20/40 level. My golf game is improving and I recently saw a ball land and bounce on a green 300 yards away. To say I’m thrilled is an understatement, and I owe it all to Dr. Maller!!!
