From The Patients...
After speaking with many patients, several requested that I set up a place where they could
tell their stories. I have set aside this area so that their stories, in their own words would
be related to the world. The following are the patients' unedited comments. In addition, several
of these patients have included their email address so that should you have questions/concerns/etc.
and would like to get their perspectives and experiences, you can send these requests directly to them.
They truly understand what it is like to be in a similar position to yourself and are eager to help
in any way they can. I hope that you find this patient perspectives area useful.

I had been wearing contact lenses for about 40 years when I first moved to Florida in 2002. At the time, I was wearing soft
contact lenses for about 15 years, but knew I would have to move into a hard lens, when I started driving which necessitated
clearer vision. For about 5 years I had gone to some good optometrists in the Miami and Ft. Lauderdale areas but problems
began to surface, and the current optometrist I had been seeing could no longer fit me and referred me to Dr. Maller. When
I called Dr. Maller for the first time, he was very informative about his work, about the new contact lenses on the market,
and was optimistic about successfully fitting me.
At my first appointment, Dr. Maller examined my eyes with cutting edge technology, which precisely measured the shape of my
cornea and assured the best possible fit. He also examined my eyes very thoroughly in terms of vision. I had been dealing with
several issues; namely, severe myopia, a heavy lid, cataracts, and dry eyes. As a long time contact lens wearer, I was unhappy
about the prospect of wearing glasses, and knew that Dr. Maller might be the last stop on the road for me.
Dr. Maller successfully fitted me with a gas permeable lens. There was some tweaking to be done, and over the years, he has
adjusted the fit and the lens to the best possible fit and comfort level. I admittedly demand crisp vision and a very comfortable
fit, and Dr. Maller has consistently fitted me successfully, even if it took several trys to get there.
About 1-1/2 years ago, I was diagnosed with diabetes. I had an appointment with Dr. Maller for my annual examination for contact
lenses, and he explained to me that my vision could not be tested until the diabetes was under control. At the time, I was under
the care of my primary care physician, who I was scheduled to see some 2 months later. Dr. Maller emphasized the importance of
getting the sugar under control immediately and not waiting for the 2 months to see the doctor. In fact, he was instrumental
regarding my decision to see an endocrinologist, who immediately changed my medications and who I now see every three months.
This was an extremely important decision in my life and I owe this decision in great part to Dr. Maller, who emphasized the
importance of seeing a specialist, of regulating the sugar, and in general, getting this serious situation under control quickly.
I am very happy with my endocrinologist and the care I receive, due in great part to Dr. Maller.
Dr. Maller and I also have discussed cataract surgery in detail, about the various lenses available on the market and the pros and
cons of each. Although my cataracts are not ready for surgery yet, I am sure I will welcome the advice of Dr. Maller as the time
draws closer.
I had also contemplated undergoing some cosmetic surgery on my eyelids, which I discussed with Dr. Maller. He pointed out that
the surgery might have a very adverse effect on my tears and that in the end, it might prove to be a bad decision. After thinking
it through, I knew it was not worth the risk and welcomed his honesty and advice.
On a personal level, Dr. Maller is always extremely patient and thorough, eager to answer any questions, and pleasant to deal
with. Even though there may be patients in the waiting room, he has never rushed me, and has always tried to accommodate my
work schedule by giving me an early appointment, even arriving a little early to do so.
His expertise in fitting contact lenses is exemplary. He is on the cutting edge of technology, completely up to date on new
arrivals on the market place and the viability of each lens.
I am very grateful to Dr. Maller, not only for fitting me with wonderful contact lenses, but also in directly contributing to
significant decisions that affected my health in general. I wholeheartedly recommend Dr. Kenneth Maller and welcome any
questions. You may contact me through him.
